Puma Ocean Racing powered by Berg is in winning mode

Ross’s work with the PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG team first came to the Award judges’ attention in Leg 1 as he captured the amazing story of his crew’s unscheduled trip to the remote island of Tristan da Cunha in the mid-Atlantic.

The boat had to take refuge there after breaking her mast but Ross made the most of the situation with a string of superb video diaries, one of which was later used on the top American TV programme, The Today Show.

His work on Leg 3 included a live interview with UK Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts and the EU’s Vice President of the European Commission, Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, Antonio Tajani.

“British satellite technology is enabling one of the world’s most exciting yachting events to be broadcast globally to millions of smartphones and computers,” said Willetts. “This is testament to the continued success of the UK space industry and innovative companies like Inmarsat.”

According to Volvo Ocean Race’s MCM Project chief Rick Deppe, it was only a matter of time before Ross enjoyed his own day in the sun.

“Amory is such a talented guy across all the media—video, stills, text—and it’s a joy to see his work coming in every day. He keeps up an unbelievable standard,” said Deppe.

“He has tried from the outset to combine his mastery of composition with a keen eye for a story. On Leg 3 it all came together with some strong sequences and great material in general, not only video but also superb writing,” added Deppe, himself an Inmarsat MCM Award overall winner in the 2008-09 edition.

Chris McLaughlin, vice-president external affairs, was impressed with Ross’s work when a VIP came to see Inmarsat’s high-tech boat technology in action.

“The MCMs just get better and better,” said McLaughlin. “In the live interview with David Willetts and Antonio Tajani he demonstrated the media desk, answering their many unscripted questions, at night, in 30 knots of wind off the coast of Vietnam.”

Speaking immediately after receiving his award Ross said he was thrilled to be rewarded for the effort he had put into Leg 3.

“A couple of years ago when I decided this was something I wanted to do, the level of the MCM role wasn’t the standard it is today,” he said.

“Now we’ve all worked really hard to make it a vital role that shares this sport and this race with everyone.”

Hamish Hooper of CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand was voted a narrow runner-up after another excellent leg of top quality content from the winner of the first 2011-12 Race Inmarsat MCM Award in Leg 1.

Nick Dana from Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, another regular contender for the top prize, was third.

Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband units, fitted to each of the six Volvo Open 70s, allow racers to communicate with the outside world from the world’s oceans, giving race fans access to blogs, photographs, audio clips and HD video footage.
